This was done by equipping Air Force C-121 Super Constellations with radar and communications equipment which could maintain an air defense barrier several hundred miles off the shores of the United States. The new defense concept was designed to provide greater early warning time in case of an enemy attack upon the nation. As a result, the
    USAF 965th Airborne Early Warning & Control Squadron
    was born as a defense necessity in the 1960s.
