Ultra Rare 1st Model German Naval Dagger with Sailing Ship Etch by Robert Klaas

Description

This ball top Naval dagger from around 1934-1936 is an extremely rare 1st Model type having survived the adjustment of putting the 1937 eagle on it.
The pommel is an outstanding ball top featuring hand enhancing to the reeds and cattails which are placed above cresting waves.
The early crossguard is also extremely nice having the diamond on the back of the center block and fouled anchors on the obverse.
The wood based, white/off white celluloid covered grip looks wonderful! The tightly wrapped double twisted brass wire wrap remains intact!
The brass based scabbard is an interesting example and has roped figure eight style bands with other additional detail below the bands on both sides! There is minor period wear. Both throat retaining screws remain intact as well.
The early Klaas blade has the acid etched Sailing Ship etch; this deep etch really jumps off the blade. The obverse features floral patterns, a fouled anchor, and a fully rigged sailing ship on a bed of sea plants. The reverse is nearly identical, omitting the fouled anchor. The obverse ricasso is beautifully stamped with the Klaas maker mark. The tip and the blade are good and can be seen in images. The buffer pad is lost to time.
This dagger with sailing ship etch by Klaas is extremely rarer than the U-9 navy dagger by Klaas.
Those who know Kriegsmarine, Naval dirks know that Robert Klaas marked naval/kriegsmarine daggers with the sailing ship etch are extremely rare especially the one that has ball top pommel that I have. Try to find another!
